The first cognitive confusion that I want to bring to the reader’s attention is related to phenomenologist Edmund Husserl’s depiction of the “surreptitious substitution” of the actual world by a “mathematically ‘substructed’ world of idealities.” I don’t agree with the characterization of this substitution as ‘surreptitious,’ because it was done in plain sight for hundreds of years. In fact, it was lauded as the scientific ideal of human knowledge — a body of knowledge that was built, not from the personal world that is actual, but from a world without feeling or immediacy, for those are dismissed as so much subjectivity.
